Volkswagen, the German automaker announced the launching of its new model Volkswagen Jetta in the year 1980. This was an awesome model that captivated the car buying public for 28 years. The Jetta was named after the Jet Stream, the sedan version of Volkswagen’s innovative compact the Golf. The Jetta was brought out by VW for the North American market. It is an upscale model with nicer interior trim, a trunk, and a slightly higher price than the Golf. Since its debut the Jetta has evolved five times. Each generation had grown in size, power, and prestige. The Jetta is available in the car market in two, four, and five door variations.

The first-generation Jetta, named the A1 was produced by Volkswagen from 1980 through 1984. It stormed onto the North American market in 1980. It was available as a two-door coupe and four-door sedan. Styled by ItalDesign, it was a marvellously boxy. This model came out with a standard four-cylinder engine producing 78 horsepower. The Jetta’s power plant was updated to a higher torque producing 1.7-liter four-cylinder in 1981. The diesel version of the engine came out producing a high performance GLI Jetta with a 1.8-liter engine in 1984.

Volkswagen brought out the seond generation of Jetta A2 from 1985 through 1992. It was fast running coupe or a sedan with a number of exterior, interior, engine, and safety upgrades. It had a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing originally 100 horsepower and later 105 horsepower powered the base models of the A2. The 1990 Jetta GLI was muscled up with a 2.0-liter, DOHC, 16 valve four-cylinder engine that produced 134 horsepower and firmly established the Jetta GLI as a serious performance contender.

The A3 Jetta made its debut in the North American market in 1993. This boxy design from Volkswagen was only offered as a sedan. The A3 Jetta was produced through 1998 available in trim variations, 13, then any other generation of the car. The A3 Jetta had three power plants offered. The base was 2.0-liter inline four cylinder producing 115 horsepower. The Jetta diesel, TDI, was a 1.9-liter diesel engine rated at 90 horsepower. It also had two more models in later years.

The Golf model from Volkswagen is known around the world under different names. They are popular in different labels, including, Caddy, CitiGolf and Rabbit. The Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI are true classic and iconic models. Volkswagen by lunching out the Golf model was able to grab a big portion of the automobile market within a short time.  With the Beetle originally taking the stage as the VW mass produced car, Volkswagen were forced to develop another cheap to produce mass market car. By acquiring Audi, VW greatly increased the experience and knowledge of designing and building front engine cars. This meant that the Golf was set up for great success.

The respected designer Giorgio Giugiaro designed the new small and affordable car with a hatchback powered by a front wheel drive Audi GT engine. This design is now commonly known for the huge popularity of the Volkswagen which was designed, the MKI Golf. The production of the car was started in the German Wolfsburg car plant, where 1.1 litre and 1.6 lire variations were made to serve the mass market. It was available in the option of two or four door Golfs, and the variations were received with great and well welcomed reviews. Building on the huge success of the MKI, VW released the GTI, a pioneer of the hot hatch market.

The Golf model had a newly added fuel injection that increased the power. The new design choice was popular and maintained its place on further Golf variations. The Golf received some further alterations in the early eighties, including the introduction of a new variation, the VW Golf cabriolet. The convertible was a great success and its sales continued therefore resulting in a relatively success production run.
The MKII Golf was released in 84, with a large range of variations including a 1.6 litres model. Although in spite of the massive increase in variations in the market, the MKII GTI did not do as well.

The VW Golf continued to perform very well in the marketplace, with the MKIII Golf regaining the market in few years. The Golf from VW is an iconic model that the car lovers still love to own.
