![]() |
BMW, the car manufacturer began operations in the year 1913 in Munich, Germany. The production of cars started in the year 1928 and the success in cars helped the company to overcome the depression. But the period of World War II was crucial for BMW. After the war, the BMW had to wind up the car manufacturing for 3 years due to political compulsions. It came back to manufacturing in the year 1949.In 1951, BMW introduced a spacious, 6-cylinder sedan called the 501,
Which was followed by the 502 which featured a lightweight alloy V8 engine. In the late 1950s they brought out the BMW 507, a lightweight, V8 propelled sports car. This was the vehicle they hoped would revive the sporting success they’d achieved with the 328 roadster. But this wasn’t to be. But the production of 507 had to be stopped in 1960 due to financial crisis.
Also in the 1950s BMW bought the design and manufacturing rights to the Isetta which later became one of the most successful micro cars in the post WWII years. Manufacturing rights for the Isetta were later sold to various production companies around the world. The 1960s were the triumphant years of BMW. It brought out different successful models over the years including the BMW 1500 which was a 1499cc, four cylinder touring sedan in 1961, which was the first of the modern BMW sports sedans. A series of popular sedans including the famous BMW 2002 came out then. This was a 2-door sedan that had been based upon the 4-door 1600. The 2002 was to be the forerunner of the BMW 3 series until 1976. BMW cemented its reputation as an innovative automobile manufacturing company in the 1970s. It introduced the 3-tier sports sedan range consisting of the 3-series, 5-series and the 7-series and quadrupled and turnover increased by 1700% by the year 1993
