EXHAUST SYSTEMS
![]() |
Exhaust system carries away the gases which are harmful to humans and environment created when fuel and air are burned in the combustion chamber. To have its knowledge is beneficial for your family safety.
Exhaust system is basically a combination of certain parts like manifold, oxygen cylinder and all. Here is a brief explanation about them.
Exhaust manifold: - Exhaust manifold is generally made up of cast iron but now days manifold made up of steel, aluminum and stainless steel are also available. Exhaust manifold attaches to cylinder head. Its main function is that it takes each cylinder exhaust and combines it into main pipe.
Oxygen sensor: - Oxygen sensor is an instrument mounted on an exhaust manifold or near by in an exhaust pipe is used in cars to measure the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust. So that later computer can add or subtract fuel to obtain the correct mixture for maximum fuel economy.
Al most all the cars which have its engines using fuel injection technology utilizes oxygen sensor to measure oxygen amount present in the exhaust.
Muffler: - We all know that combustion process is a series of explosion that create lot of noise. Muffler’s function is to quiet the exhaust down to the acceptable levels. Some mufflers uses fiber glass packing which absorbs the sound energy as the gases flow through, while some uses baffles to bounce the exhaust around dissipating the energy and quieting the noise.
Catalytic converter: - catalytic converter mounted between exhaust manifold and muffler. Catalytic converter looks very similar muffler part and converts harmful gases carbon monoxide and hydro carbons into water vapor and carbon dioxide. Some catalytic converters also reduce harmful nitrogen oxides.
Exhaust pipe: - Exhaust pipe is a pipe made up of steel which carries the gases throughout its journey till it exits from the tail pipe. At times it is also made up of stainless steel or aluminum steel because they last longer due to its corrosion resistance. Aluminized steel has better corrosion resistance than plain steel but stain less steel is better option then it although aluminized steel is cheaper then stainless steel.
Remember rust is the biggest enemy to our exhaust .which is caused by the moisture which is a by product of the catalytic converter and oxygen reaction with iron .Evaporation of the moisture is a process which takes time you have to drive at least 15 miles for this. If you drive 15 miles at a time then its good for your general iron or steel made exhaust other wise it is better to switch over to stainless steel one.
