How to buy a used car - Step-by-step Guide - Part 2
![]() |
In the first part of this two-part series, we read about how to initiate things when it comes to buying a used car. In the second and last part, we will be accessing advice on how to make an informed decision in the context of a used car purchase.
If you have not learnt driving yet, it is good to bring an expert and unbiased driver with you but do make sure that the driver does not go with the salesman for a round of talk, everything that happens during sale of the car should be before you.
Before purchasing the car, it is highly recommended that you perform a complete scan of the vehicle by examining the interiors and exteriors. Do not forget to check the vehicle body for rust or fill or racks in the frame, rusting or welding. It is also recommended that you check appearance and status of the muffler, tailpipe, and exhaust components. It is also recommended that you check accessories such as lights, horn, mirrors, seatbelts, radio, heater, air conditioner, and car windows. It is also recommended that you should check the liens against the car and check the serial number on the vehicle registration card as it is always good to ensure that there are no outstanding liens against the car and the car is not stolen.
If you are depending upon a finance company for the payment, it is highly recommended that you read the car loan offer’s terms and conditions carefully. If you are not an expert with the legal technicalities, it is good to seek the advice of an expert. You need to be absolutely clear of concepts such as reputation of the finance company, interest rate, monthly payment options, and duration of loan etc.
Last but not the least, it is important for you to ensure that all oral promises are written into the Buyer’s Guide and warranties are included in the car price.
