Porsche Boxster: Specially for Car Lovers
![]() |
Porsche is a German name, which has brought out cars from time to time. Porshe is familiar among the sports car lovers for its alluring features. The Boxster is a mid-engined roadster from Porsche, designed by Harm Lagaay.
The first-generation Boxster (the 986) came out in late 1996 . It was powered by a 2.5 litre flat six-cylinder engine. The new Boxster S variant came out in 2000 with a larger 3.2 litre motor, and the base model received a more powerful 2.7 litre engine.
In 2005, the model was further updated and internally identified as a new 987 model. The 987 is more powerful than the 986; engine output increased yet further in 2007.
The manufacturing of the 986 began at Stuttgart, Germany in 1996. The Boxster was Porsche’s biggest volume seller from its introduction in model year 1997 until the introduction of Cayenne utility vehicle in model year 2003. The Boxster’s name is a portmanteau of the word “boxer”, referring to the vehicle’s horizontally-opposed or “boxer” engine, and the word “roadster”, referring to the vehicle’s convertible top.
The first generation Boxster possessed visual appearance which was heavily inspired by the Porsche Spyder and Speedster as well as the Porsche 550 Spyder. All 986/987 Boxsters carried the M96 water cooled, horizontally opposed (”flat”), six-cylinder engine. The Boxster the M96 has a mid-engine configuration as opposed to the rear-engine placement in all 911s. The model had facelift in 2003. It installed a different exhaust pipe and modified air intake. The side marker lights on the front wings were changed from orange to clearand the bumpers were changed to a more defined, chiselled appearance.
Porshe revealed the face-lifted 2009 Boxster and Boxster S models at the at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November, 2008. Both models feature a bump in power due to an increase in displacement and use of Direct Fuel Injection. Cosmetic changes to the 2009 Boxster and Boxster S are minimal, but anyhow, the interior is fully re-designed to reduce button clutter.
