To drive in Dubai is an easy task. To garner a driving license, one must have a residency visa. This makes the chaps who arrive in Dubai on a tourist visa or visit visa to rent a vehicle for the first month or so until they get a residency visa is completed. It requires having an International Driving Permit and a driving license from your home country to rent a car here. A citizen can also meantime obtain a Temporary Driving which is valid for six months. It is issued at the Dubai Traffic Police Station.
Dubai gives certain privileges to the citizens of European countries, US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, and South Korea. They can get a local license by simply showing their own driving license and doing some paperwork. But for others, it is necessary to take driving lessons and afterwards pass a test.
Once after getting a residency visa, it is possible to buy a car. Dubai is a hub of commercial and private vehicles. All major models from large auto makers around the world are available in the Dubai automobile market. But it should be remembered that driving in Dubai Is not so easy. The traffic rules and regulations in the city are very strict and any failure in following the regulation will land you in trouble.
Dubai follows left-hand driving with traffic on right. Dubai authorities have installed mobile radar cameras around the emirate to catch those driving over the speed limit or running a red light. Zero tolerance exists for drinking and driving which may pay you heavily.
Dubai is notorious for its traffic accidents with highest road death tolls in the world. This has made the authorities to act with iron fist against traffic rule offenders. So if any plans to drive in Dubai, be vigilant about the traffic rules. Else be ready to face trial.
