![]() |
Among the hundreds of vehicles on display at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, it was the compressed natural gas powered Toyota Camry concept that deserved all admiration. Toyota, which conducted a press conference for their luxury Lexus brand managed to display the hybrid Camry, a car that is entirely different from the rest of the models. The concept of Camry could one day prove to be a very popular model if certain energy initiatives cross the marks. Let us now check out the reasons that make the cars an adorable model.
Toyota, the leading name in the automobile market is a leader when it comes to hybrid technology, producing the gas-electric Prius and a few other models including the Camry. But, the natural gas-electric hybrid Camry is an entirely different model, one that hasn’t been considered for production until now.
As per the words of Toyota, the Japanese carmaker, compressed natural gas produces lower particulate emissions, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and non-methane organic gases and less CO2 per unit of energy when compared to gasoline and also run at higher compression ratio. It quickly disperses into the atmosphere protecting the environment.
The natural gas, being a one resource that is in abundant supply in the US and being cheap by costing as much as 40% less than gasoline is always comfortable for the users.
The Camry concept is powered by the standard 2.4L, 4-cylinder engine, Hybrid Synergy Drive, and compressed natural gas system. It produces 170 horsepower, the CNG Camry Hybrid and would get nearly identical fuel economy to the gas electric Hybrid, 33 combined fuel economy. The Camry comes with Bridgestone run flat tires. It is sure that by launching this new Camry car, Toyota is planning hard days for competing car makers in the market.
